CENTRAL v. HINDLEY
Southport Visiter, 18th December 1888
On Saturday last the Central travelled to Hindley to meet the club of that name. Sourbutts was not able to play, and his place was filled by Harrison. On arriving on the ground the team were told that Hindley were determined to wine “by hook or by crook,” and judging by the way they had strengthened their ranks, it looked if such would be the case. Players had been imported from Bolton, Halliwell, and other clubs, and instead of the Central having to meet Hindley, they had to play a strong combination assisted by a few of the Hindley team. It is unnecessary to give a description of the game, as the way in which the home team went about their work was characterised by horse play. Immediately after the commencement Ingram was crippled, and during the progress of the match Mullin was struck severely in the face by one of his opponents. Throughout, the exhibition of the home players was of the roughest nature, and in the end they gained the victory by three goals to one. Central Team -Ingram, Aitken, Shaw, Horton, Ackroyd, Lea-Jones, Duncan, Graham, Harrison, Taylor, and Mullin.
