AFC Telford 1 v 0 Southport

In front of a bumper crowd, including a large following from Southport, the Yellows set off to quiet the home support, frustrating their hosts with a formation unfamiliar to recent games. Southport had the better of the early chances, with Mark Duffy running rings around the bemuzed Bucks defence, with Adam Flynn’s ball into the box arriving at Duffy. whose shot across the goal skimmed wide. Daly again laid off a ball to Ashley Winn, whose shot moments later deflected wide for a corner. Duffy’s corner was returned back to him, with his scuffed shot from the edge of the area going straight to Ryan Young in the Bucks goal.

Southport did a good jod subduing their hosts, with their only chance falling to Lee Vaughan, who played a one-two, with the shot weakly going to Tony McMillan, and on the stroke of half time, Andy Brown connecting to a left-wing free-kick, with his head going wide of the target.

The momentum definately went with the home side in the early stages of the second half, as Andy Brown looked clear to score, but his shot was stopped by Matty McGinn, with the follow-up going away for a corner. A comical moment followed a few moments later, as the letter ‘S’ from the David Hutchinson Stand came tumbling down as a wayward shot over the bar crashed against the top of the stand.

Telford took the lead with a quarter of an hour to go as a Lee Moore left wing cross fell kindly to Andy Brown who headed the ball down into the net, with McMillan stranded. Southport had a glorious chance to equalise within minutes when dogged determination won Mark Duffy a corner, with the ball played high into the area for Kevin Lee, whose header was pushed away by Ryan Young straight to the feet of Neil Robinson, who got under the ball, shooting high above the target from close range.

This proved to be Southport’s last chance of the game, with minds now having to concentrate on cup matters.
