Southport returned to winning ways at Haig Avenue, dominating long periods of the game as they ran out 2-1 winners after going down early on.
Despite Southport’s early dominance, they found themselves a goal down on 11 minutes when a break up front by Michael Frew saw the King’s Lynn winger try to pass across the area, but the ball took a deflection off Adam Flynn, diverting the ball into the net.
However, Southport seized the game again, and were in front in a five minute spell. The equaliser came from a clever run into the box by Mark Duffy, who unselfishly played the ball across to Steve Daly who side footed the ball home. Five minutes later, Ciaran Kilheeney was given acres of space on the edge of the box, pulling his shot towards goal, with Scott Howie diving late as he realised the ball was going goal-ward, as it sneaked just inside the left hand post.
The game took a while to get going in the second half, but when it did, it all started to get a bit feisty. Adam Flynn saw his clear header go over the bar from Matty McGinn’s right-wing corner, and Julian Joachim’s corner was scrambled off the line by three or four Southport players, as Simon Weaver tried to slot the ball home. Mark Duffy rang rings around Ben Chapman throughout the afternoon, allowing a dangerous cross into McGinn, but his header went to the keeper.
