Southport 3 v 2 Vauxhall Motors

Southport held onto a slender lead to progress to the draw on Monday, as Southport proceed to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup

A steady start to the game, with Southport grinding out the first chance within the first two minutes as Kevin Lee got a high ball into the box, only for Neil Robinson to skim his header wide. Vauxhall themselves had a couple of chances to sneak the lead as Lee Owens played the ball inside the box to Jon Egerton, whose shot was blocked at close range by a Southport defender, only for the ball to eventually fall to Jordan Holmes, whose shot across goal went wide.

The game fell flat for a good fifteen minutes, but Southport sparked back into action as Michael Powell sliced his shot over the bar from close range after some good build-up play from his team-mates, and moments later Kev Lee’s cross into the box was headed into the side netting from close range.

Southport took the lead in the fourteenth minute as Earl Davis flicked the ball onto Neil Robinson in the centre of the box, with Robinson meeting the ball sweetly as he volleyed the ball home.

Vauxhall got themselves level as the half-time whistle was looming, when Tom Rooney picked up the ball down the right channel, and with a fierce shot from the edge of the area struck the ball low, beating Tony McMillan to peg the scores level as the teams went in for the break.

Southport found themselves behind within the first six minutes of the second half as Alan Moogan caught Karl Noon in the box, with the referee and assistant hesitating, finally deciding on a penalty, with which Rooney blasted home, sending McMillan the wrong way.

Neil Robinson promptly replied with a close range header which was blocked on the line as Southport started to realise they were behind.

Southport finally started to improve their build-up play, with Matty McGinn fighting well for a throw-in near the corner flag, which the winger himself took, sailing the ball into the box where it was helped on to Neil Robinson at the back post, who headed the ball down into the net, despite James Coates getting his hand to the ball.

Chris Price nearly scored with his first touch of the ball as he was introduced in place of Michael Powell, as McGinn got the ball neatly into his path, but the shot was well blocked by the Motors defence.

Southport re-took the lead from a Tony Gray corner which went through to Neil Robinson, whose shot on goal came back off the cross bar to James Connolly who blasted the ball through a crowd of players into the net.

Chris Price was the turning point for Southport, who appeared to lack ideas until his introduction mid-way through the second half, but the performance prior to that will leave Liam Watson bemused that his team can go off the boil so much.
