With the weather conditions proving difficult for both sides, Tony Gray seized upon the wind behind Southport’s back trying his luck from 30 yards, which forced Chris Wright to push the ball around his post for a corner. However, moments later, Chris Holland played a good ball through to Michael Rae who turned his defender before getting the ball to Tony Gray who made no mistake from close range.
Southport continued to dominate, with Rae getting a dangerous ball out to Mark Duffy, only for his shot to be cut out by Liam Green, and minutes later some persistent running from Paul Barratt ended up with the ball getting through to Duffy, but this time he stabbed his low shot just wide of the near post.
Despite a lull in the game, Southport added to their lead as Paul Ellender fouled Ollie James on the edge of the box, with Mark Duffy curling his shot low around the wall, with the ball sailing into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The weather conditions improved for the second half, with Boston being sent out a good five minutes before the Southport players arrived, with the visitors clearly keen to get themselves back into t he game. They had a good chance as Liam Green crossed the ball with Simon Weaver heading his chance across goal. Southport broke, and could have extended their lead as Rae’s powerful shot was dropped away for a corner by Chris Wright. From that corner, Kevin Lee just headed wide at the back post. Minutes later Boston pulled a goal back as Simon Weaver climbed in the Southport box after the linesman ignored a clear handball, with Weaver’s powerful header giving Terry Smith no chance as it went into the top left corner of the goal.
The game died down again, forcing both managers to ring the changes, but the impetus mainly fell with Boston. Ashley Nicholls tried his luck from the edge of the area, but Terry Smith was equal to the danger. As stoppage time continued, Boston pressed forward winning a corner. The ball was floated into the Southport box, where Weaver climbed to claim his second of the afternoon, as Southport saw two points disappear, with Boston clearly delighted that they salvaged a point from a game that should have been put beyond them a lot earlier in the day.
