Turbines unable to fire far from home
The Non-League Football Paper

SOUTHPORT hosted Peterborough Sports in a tight contest, resulting in a goalless draw. The first half saw few clear chances for Southport’s Marcus Carver and Josh Hmami. The second half sparked into life as Southport emerged brighter, with Hmami squandering a golden opportunity in the 63rd minute, firing wide with an open goal beckoning. There was drama in the 68th minute as Peterborough Sports’ Dan Lawlor received two quick yellow cards reducing the visitors to ten men. Southport pressed for a winner, with Matty Thomson finding the net, only for the offside flag to deny them. In a frantic finale Southport’s Will Russ scuffed a late chance wide in the dying seconds. Despite spells of pressure, Southport failed to find the breakthrough. The match ended in a stalemate, much to the disappointment of the crowd. Both teams will rue missed opportunities as they settle for a point each in a game of near-misses and defensive resilience. Ahead of the game all the talk had been about the visitors 100% record against Southport and them being a bit of a bogey side to the home club but that was laid to rest in a game that won’t live long in the memory but Southport will rue two very good chances to have taken all three points.
