That’ll be the Day for Town as they hold on
The Non-League Football Paper
By Rob Urwin A STOP-start first half, and nine added minutes, produced three goals. Alfreton took the lead in the 12th minute when Liam Waldock coolly finished from close range after Gerry McDonagh nodded the ball down to him. Southport bounced back in the 24th minute when Marcus Carver capitalised on a bad back-pass and finished well from a tight angle to bring the scores level. It was Carver again in the eighth added minute of the half who gave the home side the lead, finishing through a crowded penalty area after the visitors failed to clear a corner. The hosts had a great chance to increase their lead in the 51st minute when a defensive slip allowed Luke Burgess to have a clear run at goal and he squared to Tyler Walton, who fired just wide. Jake Day drew an excellent save out of Chris Renshaw in the 79th minute as Alfreton’s aerial bombardment continued. Just when it looked like the home side were going to get a much-needed home win, Alfreton came back with two late goals. Firstly substitute Day prodded home in the 88th minute before McDonagh put the icing on the cake with a 90th-minute winner. Southport’s Josh Hmami hit a post late on.
