Sandgrounders grind out much-needed win
HEREFORD 0 SOUTHPORT 1

MARCUS Carver’s second-half strike earned a first win of the season for Jim Bentley’s side as Southport moved off the foot of the table.
But it’s gloomy at Edgar Street as a fourth straight defeat for Paul Caddis’s men saw the Bulls sit a point outside the drop zone.
In a scrappy first-half, the few chances that arose fell to Hereford. On five minutes, a curler from Alex Babos from the edge of the area flew just over to land on the roof of the net.
Then, two minutes later, Tom Hewlett raced clear on the left and cut in only to sky his shot.
The best effort came on 13 minutes when Jordan Cranston came forward from left-back and drilled a 30-yarder inches wide.
Southport began to show more spark at the start of the second period and only a fine clearance by Paul Downing prevented a goal after Tyler Walton had outwitted Nathan Cameron.
On 57 minutes, Niall Watson delivered a cross from the right and the Hereford defence was absent as Carver headed in.
Hereford had their chances to level, none better than when Adam Rooney delivered from the right only for debutant Kian Ryley to miss his kick with the goal gaping.
