Lethal Archer hits bullseye

By James Houghton

Nov 6, 2022

SUPER-SUB Jordan Archer rallied Southport as the Sandgrounders staged a second-half comeback.Southport came close to opening the scoring within five minutes as Marcus Carver saw his shot cleared off the line. But in a cagey first half it was a moment of Chorley magic that broke the deadlock. Jon Ustabasi cutting in from the left-wing before curling a stunning effort in at the back post, giving Tony McMillan no chance.Southport searched for an equaliser throughout the end of the first-half and the beginning of the second, but Chorley looked resolute, giving up little more than half-chances until the 65th minute, when a lapse in concentration allowed Archer to meet a Michael Carberry cross, but the former Boston United man could not direct his header on target.Archer would make no such mistake eight minutes later as his flicked header into the back of the net to level. Two minutes later, Archer would add his second to wrap up all three points as a lovely bit of passing around the penalty area saw Niall Watson get in behind before sending a low ball across the face of goal with Southport’s number 9 stooping low to nod in.

Report By Matty Hurst

A strong second half performance sees Southport come from behind to beat Chorley in a very tense game giving the 1390 fans in attendance an eventful Saturday afternoon. The game started with a bang as Carver thought he’d taken the lead but his attempted bicycle kick was cleared off the line after an instinctive piece of defending by a Chorley defender. The game had few chances following that until the 28th minute where Ustabasi fired a long range effort which flew past McMillan giving Chorley the lead. Not much happened in the latter stages of the first half other than a couple of good saves by McMillan to keep ‘Pport in the game, the first half finished 1-0 to Chorley in what can only be described as an underwhelming half of football.Southport shone in the second half and after a few good chances they finally equalised in the 73rd minute when Hmami crossed in a strong corner which Archer flicked on past Urwin. This momentum carried on and Archer doubled his tally following a well-worked move found Watson in behind the defence with Archer to find and once again he fired his header firmly past the unsighted Urwin. The game finished 2-1 giving Southport a boost after moving up to 7th with a tough game on Tuesday as leaders Brackley Town visit Haig Ave.
