SOUTHPORT failed to win for the third game in a row after a cagey game in Fylde ended in defeat.
But after a disappointing display on Saturday against Telford, the visitors were much improved and were very unfortunate not to come away with a share of the spoils.
The game started quickly with Fylde on top seeing them take the lead in the seventh minute after Nick Haughton tapped in a low ball fired across the face of the goal leaving Mason unsighted as the ball flew past him and into the goal.
Southport built pressure looking to equalise but it was Fylde who had the next noticeable chance in the 38th minute as Barrett wriggled through the Southport defence giving him a 1 on 1 but Mason stood tall and smothered the ball to end the attack.
The first half ended 1-0 to the home side with nothing much happening, leaving Southport with a lot to improve on in the second half.
Southport started the second half better with a chance falling for Lusiama in the 67th minute when he was played in behind the Fylde defence but his effort at goal was deflected wide for a corner.
Fylde did have a chance to double their lead however when in the 69th minute substitute Holmes picked out Barrett on the edge of the box but he couldn’t direct his shot goalward.
The chances kept coming for Port right until the end but unfortunately they couldn’t find that end product which would’ve rescued a point.
The travelling fans gave the lads a rousing round of applause at the end of the game in recognition of a much improved showing.
It was great to see Josh Hmami come on midway through the second half and Declan Evans got through a good solid 90 minutes.
Southport are at Banbury on Saturday.
