Southport started brightly and less than a minute in had the first chance of the game as Doug Tharme headed clearance went behind the Farsley back line, Jordan Archer beat the offside trap laid for him but his finish was tame and caused David Robson no issues.

Five minutes later a signature Tharme long throw was headed back across the penalty box by Jack Bainbridge towards Adam Anson. The centre-back turned the ball goalwards but was denied by Robson with a good save, low to the goalkeeper’s right.

Despite Southport’s good start it was Farsley who thought they had taken the lead seven minutes into the game as a deep free-kick was turned into the net at the back post by Dave Syers, only for the Farsley skipper to see his effort denied by the linesman’s flag.

Tharme rattled the post with a header not long after, as Robson failed to claim a Josh Hmami free-kick allowing Tharme a free effort on goal. The rebound fell at the feet of Archer but he sliced his effort and Farsley cleared to spare Robson’s blushes.

Cam Mason denied Chris Atkinson with a superb save in the 26th minute, reacting quickest as a long throw landed at Atkinson’s feet.

Southport traded long throws with Farsley, coming close through Connor Woods after Tharme’s powerful throw not long before half-time.

The final chance of an end-to-end first half went the hosts way as Will Hayhurst’s volley was blocked by the feet of Mason after a well worked set-piece routine.

Southport once again came out on the front foot after the break, Archer flicking on a long ball to put Tyler Walton through on goal, but the midfielder, who joined Southport from the game’s hosts, chose power over precision as he shot careened high and wide.

Frank Mulhern’s driven effort from 20-yards on the hour mark forced another save from Mason.

Mulhern would not be denied at the next time of asking though as the Irish striker converted from the penalty spot after Chris Doyle was adjudged to have blocked a Farsley shot with his arm.

Southport probed for an equaliser and had two golden opportunities ten minutes before the end. First Jordan Archer headed against the post from a long throw-in, before George Newell’s shot from close range was pushed on to the post by Robson.

Southport didn’t take their chances and were punished in the 87th minute as referee Ben Wyatt once again pointed to the penalty spot, this time for a foul by Cam Mason. Will Hayhurst slotted in from the spot to wrap up the three points for Farsley.

Southport will now welcome Spennymoor to Haig Avenue next Saturday.
