Southport 2 Guiseley 1 Match Report
Jan 29, 2022
Southport stretched their unbeaten league run to 14 games with a hard fought 2-1 win against Guiseley. A brace from Jordan Archer gave the home side all three points. They say the sign of a side going to do well is when you win and don’t play particularly well and this was the case this afternoon.
The blustery wind negated any chance of a spectacular game but the majority in a season’s best crowd of 1401 were happy to go home with the points in the bag.
Southport started brightly and should have had the ball in the net after just 2 minutes in a manic goalmouth scramble that the visiting defence managed to get away.
It took until the 17th minute for Southport to take the lead when a cross in by Doyle found Archer in space and he headed home to make it 1-0.
Guiseley were playing some neat football and came back into the game and deservedly got an equaliser on 39 minutes when Scott McLean ran on to a through ball and fired home from 20 yards. There were a few appeals for offside but the video shows he is clearly onside when the ball is played through.
1-1 at the break.
Southport were attacking a packed Jack Carr Stand in the second half playing into the wind and whilst not creating a great many chances did come close hitting the bar and Connor Woods fired into the side netting. The lively Tyler Walton was causing problems down the right and put in some good crosses without anyone getting on the end of them.
Guiseley had their best chance of the game when Nicholson fired over when well placed much to the relief of the home fans.
The introduction of Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Ryan Corrigan seemed to spark some life into a rather lacklustre Southport and the winning goal came from Archer after a through ball by Bainbridge and hesitation in the Guiseley back line in the 85th minute to prod home the winning goal and send the Southport fans into raptures.
39 points halfway through the season and sixth place in the table isn’t a bad return as we enter into a busy February with games every Tuesday/Saturday starting with a long midweek trip to Kettering on Tuesday.
