Carver’s treble lifts Sandgrounders

A MARCUS Carver hat-trick to bring up his 14th goal of the season saw Southport to a fantastic 4-1 win and a move up the table to 15th.

Ten points from the last four home games have seen the rapid rise and given the home fans plenty to cheer about.

After a scrappy opening the game burst into life on 17 minutes when firstly Carver was through on goal but shot straight at the ‘keeper but seconds later the same player was through on goal again and made no mistake after a through ball by Josh Hmami.

The impressive Charlie Munro then fired an excellent 25 yard effort against the crossbar with the keeper well beaten in the 24th minute.

Boston created very little but Adam Anson was on hand to head over the bar after a sharp turn in the box by Joe Leesley.

Southport increased their lead when Jordan Archer headed home from close range after an excellent cross from Dylan Vassallo in the 54th minute.

Boston introduced two subs and it sparked them into life and it came as no surprise when they reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute. A big goalmouth scramble ended when the ball fell to Fraser Preston on the edge of the area and he fired home a delightful finish to make it 2-1.

Boston were enjoying their best spell of the game but this Southport side are resilient and repelled what was thrown at them with the back line outstanding once again.

On 82 minutes that man Carver was on hand to prod the ball home to make it 3-1 and he completed his hat-trick on 89 minutes with another poachers finish after a great run and cross by Isaac Buckley-Ricketts to round off another impressive afternoon for the front man.

Marcus took all the plaudits winning man of the match but the whole team put in a great shift and the tracking back and willingness to fight for every ball by every player made for another great afternoon at Haig Avenue.

A Fans Eye View By Tommy Jones

The Sandgrounders comfortably beat play-off chasing Boston.

Southport continued their recent good run after beating Boston with ease to move away from the drop zone and closer to promotion.

The Port looked in control for most of the second half until Boston grabbed what seemed to be a consolation goal 15 minutes from time. Southport’s worries were put to rest as the on-form Marcus Carver scored two more goals to win the game for the Port.

If I had to have a man of the match it would be Carver as he was at his best, Jack Doyle impressed me as well.

The next game is against Daisy Hill, which will be an interesting tie and then that is followed by an away game versus Leamington in the league. Today’s win should give us momentum in the league.
