Rivals hold on for point at The Pure Southport Visiter 2 Sep 2021
SOUTHPORT enjoyed another fine performance but once again were unable to turn the display into three deserved points which is becoming a familiar tale.
The afternoon started badly for the home side conceding a penalty after just six minutes through a handball decision. Ashley Hemmings confidently despatched the spot kick past Cam Mason.
Southport then created two golden chances with Niall Watson 16 minutes and Chris Doyle 21 minutes well placed to give the home side the advantage but both efforts were blocked by the visitors rear guard.
The game ebbed and flowed and Southport again went close in the 44th minute when Josh Hmami fired just wide.
Kidderminutester went close at the start of the second half rattling the bar but that was as close as they came in a second period dominated by the home side.
Watson went close again the the 48th minute from a superb Connor Woods cross and Woods himself fired just wide on 65 minutes with an excellent shot on the run that looked destined for the corner of the net but flew just wide.
Southport drew level on 71 minutes when another handball in the area saw the home side awarded a penalty. Marcus Carver stepped up once again to comfortably beat the ‘keeper.
It was all Southport now and chances came readily but Southport were unable to convert and the game ended 1-1.
The goal attempts of 13 to 7 in Southport’s favour told the story of the game.
Kidderminutester came into the match with maximum points and once again Southport showed they could live with a top side and with some better finishing could easily have turned one point into three.
Goalscorer Carver said after the game: “On a personal note, scoring three in three games is what a striker wants to do. I’m leading the way and helping the team out. I was happy we were able to get ourselves back in the game and get a point.
“We have a young squad and we’re still learning. We started very slow and the lads know that.
“We came in at half time and we were all disappointed. In the second half we went out and were a completely different team, we switched our mindsets and pressed from the start and penned them in for the last 45 minutes.
“We created enough chances to win and one day someone is going to get a drubbing.”

HARRIERS HOPES OF A VICTORY TAKE DIVE The Non-League Football Paper 29 Aug 2021 By James Houghton
IT was a tale of two penalty kicks at the Pure Stadium as Kidderminster Harriers dropped their first point of the season in a combative draw with Southport.
“There’s two ways of looking at it,” said Kidderminster Harriers manager Russ Penn. “I’m disappointed because we’ve come in at half-time 1-0 up and in total control of the game but then ending the game I’m delighted with a point.
“Full credit to Southport they did exactly what it says on the tin and they’re proud of it and I’ve got full compliments for them. Liam Watson’s got his side well drilled.”
Southport assistant manager Jon McCarthy said: “We think we’ve exerted a lot of pressure on them there, our keeper barely had to make a save all game.
“The supporters have been really good and can see what we’re doing. We want to win the second balls and make it really difficult to come here. I think Gloucester and Kidderminster will be happy to come away from here with a point.”
Harriers had to wait only seven minutes to take the lead after Caleb Richards’ cross ricocheted off Jack Bainbridge’s upper arm with referee Kristian Silcock pointing to the spot. Ashley Hemmings, who scored for Harriers last week at York stepped up and slotted into the bottom corner, sending goalkeeper Cameron Mason the wrong way.
Southport had a chance to level on the 15 minute mark as Marcus Carver beat Joseph Foulkes on the left-wing before cutting the ball back to an unmarked Niall Watson on the edge of the six-yard box, but keeper Luke Simpson produced a superb reaction save to deny Watson.
Simpson was almost to blame for a Southport equaliser six minutes later as he spilled a Jack Doyle cross at the feet of Chris Doyle under pressure from the centre-half. Chris Doyle then poked the ball goalwards but Geraldo Bajrami arrived late on the goal-line to clear and save the keeper’s blushes.
Southport continued to press and almost found the net on the stroke of half-time as Chris Doyle headed a cross back to the penalty spot with
Josh Hmami arriving late, but the former Marine man could only slice narrowly wide.
Port’s perseverance paid off 20 minutes before time as a long throw caused confusion before hitting Keith Lowe’s hand with the referee pointing to the spot once again. Marcus Carver stepped up to power in his third goal of the season and his second from the penalty spot.
