Prior to 1888 Southport had a number of amateur clubs, both association and rugby. 

Club formed in the summer of 1888

Every game from 1888 to the renaming of the club as Southport Vulcan in 1918, every game played as Southport Vulcan, and the two seasons as Southport Football Club prior to gaining entry to the Football League in 1921
