
On 1st October 1988 Southport played Harworth Colliery Institute in the Second Qualifying Round on the FA Cup. They ran out 2-0 victors courtesy of a 60th minute goal by Philip Marsden and 77th minute goal by Anthony Quinn. The match was watched by 262 spectators. After all matchday costs the profit of £83.80 was shared between the two clubs.
Gate receipts received amounted to £400.40. Costs claimed were £52.20 for advertising and printing, a nominal figure of £25 put through for gatemen and the fees for referee and linemen amounted to £59.40. The bulk of the expenses (£180) was paid to Harworth to cover their travel expenses from the North East. So each club eventually received a share of the profit of £41.90 each.
