Although he never played football at school he developed with his local club Tonge United. After serving his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic with Bolton Transport, he was taken on by Bolton Wanderers as a professional, making 28 First Division appearances. Signed by ex-Bolton winger Ted Vizard when manager of Swindon Town, he had 124 Southern Section games for the Wiltshire club in three and a half seasons. A dour defender who was resolute in the tackle, he was transfer listed by Swindon at a fee after suffering cartilage problems, but he signed for Southport as a part-time professional after the League granted him a free transfer. His contract was cancelled after just 9 League games, plus a further 10 reserve games and 6 in the Northern Midweek League, consequent on his suffering a badly injured thigh in a collision during a match at Clitheroe. He still lives (and speaks) in his native Tonge.
