Known as “The Nettler” in Ireland, Tommy Doyle was affectionately dubbed “Dynamite Doyle” by Southport fans for his explosive bursts on goal. He joined Southport after walking into the manager’s office and demanding a trial. A tireless player described as “never in repose during the game,” Doyle excelled in the Reserves, scoring 22 goals in 30 League and Cup games. He scored in both his first and last games for Southport and learned penalty-taking from Billy Semple, missing only one penalty in his career. A highlight was his hat-trick against Northern Nomads on 10 March 1934, which included two penalties. After returning to Dublin, Doyle remained active into his seventies, though tuberculosis later affected his health. He passed away at the age of 80.
