A ‘loner’who didn’t mix easily, George Carter played his entire career on the right wing after starting out with Liverpool Schoolboys. One contemporary critic said of him “he is fast, can swerve and has a shot in each boot”. Immediately selected at outside right following his signing from Prescot cables, he became – along with right Wright, Walker and McGrail – one of four amateurs in the team that drew 0-0 at Darlington.

All his 86 Football League appearances were with Southport as he was unable to break into Chester’s League team after being freed by Southport. He holds the club record for consecutive League appearances at outside right – 55 between 9th September 1935 and 21st November 1936.

Twice mentioned in despatches in the 8th Army in North Africa, he joined the family haulage business in 1949; pressure of business led to his premature death when he collapsed on the slipway at Liverpool Sailing Club.
