A machine tool maker by trade, he later joined Southport as a part-time professional after declining terms offered by Chester, who had retained him.At Manchester City, Davies scored five goals in 13 First Division games during his 5½ seasons as a professional and added 62 goals in 165 Central League matches. He joined Southport as their eighth close-season signing in 1958–59 but was granted a free transfer shortly after Wally Fielding became player-manager.
