A product of Wigan Boys Club football, he was an amateur throughout his two seasons at Haig Avenue. He first appeared in the Public Practice Match in August 1951 at outside-right but retired at half-time to make way for another amateur. He made his Combination début at outside-left against Marine. During his first season with Southport he played in every forward position with one or other of Southport’s three teams. He celebrated his home début against Wrexham with a goal. He worked down the pit from leaving school at 14. He declined to re-sign in 1953—54 due to his work at John Pit Colliery, including Saturday mornings, where he worked until 1961. He was back at Haig Avenue early in 1953—54 in the Horwich RMI team which beat Southport Reserves 2—0, but dislocated his shoulder in an F.A. Cup-tie shortly afterwards. He then played full-back for Robin Hill Colliery in the Ormskirk League, helping them to win a number of trophies, but after dislocating his other shoulder he was advised by his doctor to give up the game. He spent his last twenty years working at Wigan Infirmary as a maintenance fitter until taking early retirement. Today his chief recreation is swimming.
