When he joined Southport on trial as a part-time professional he became the twentieth paid player on the books, yet the only one Southport born. He first came into prominence as a schoolboy, then joined Everton playing in their F.A. Youth Cup team. With Blackpool he had occasional Central League games, but prior to joining Southport he had been playing for Southport Trinity. Originally signed on a month’s trial period, this was extended to another month before being fixed up to the end of the season. After only four appearances in the Reserves, where his long, accurate passing was a feature, came his only League match when he deputised for Jack Hannaway and marked ex-Scottish International Bobby Johnstone who played a prominent part in Oldham Athletic’s win. He now has a cleaning business – established for 30 years – and lives in Hoole, Preston. A good cricketer in the Southport & District League, he still turns out for Fleetwood Hesketh 2nd XI.
