Reg Gore

Reg Gore had a most unusual career. A winger from the outset, he was signed by Chesterfield on amateur forms as a youngster. He worked at Homewood Pit and turned semi-professional at 17. Jimmy Commins brought him to Haig Avenue and after Bob Griffith’s departure, Bill Jeavons switched wings to allow him in on the left. After being released by Southport, he joined up with the newly constituted South Liverpool. Almost three seasons later, he came back into League Football with Second Division West Ham but a broken ankle in a Reserve game at Bristol City set his career back. He joined the Metropolitan Police on the outbreak of war but was called up in 1940. After guesting with St Mirren during the war, he played for them in 1946—47 in the Scottish First Division and then enjoyed a further year with Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Second Division. He finished up coaching Bilsthorpe Colliery’s team and working there until retiring with angina at 62. He still lives in Mansfield.
