This District League product played right-back, right-half, centre-half and throughout the forward line whilst with St Paul’s. Born Charles Golding but better known as ‘Chick’ or ‘Chicken,’ he played on and off in the Southport Lancashire Combination team in 1935—36. A critic at that time wrote, “while there has been nothing brilliant about his play, he has shown purpose and strength and promise of better things to come.” He celebrated his first team début by scoring against Tranmere Rovers in a Northern Section Cup-tie on 25 February 1936 and in his second Football League outing he deputised in goal when George Talbot collided with Jack Grainger and had to go off. During the war, he served overseas in the Navy, and in October 1946 it was reported that he had turned out for High Park at centre-half and played ‘a stormer.’ By the 1980s he was living in Melbourne, Australia.
