Educated at Blackburn Grammar School, he played as an amateur until joining Southport. He made a scoring début against his old club Nelson, to enable Southport to extend their good run at Seedhill where they had not lost since 21 April 1925. He reverted to his amateur status on returning to Clitheroe and appeared against Southport Reserves on a number of occasions. A qualified designer, he became a weaving and spinning executive for a group of mills and was based in the Manchester area for many years. The family moved to Arnside in 1966 but a bad fall caused brain damage and occasional blindness. He was in hospital for some years up to his death..
