A Toxteth lad who was spotted by Albert Dunlop, then Ormskirk’s manager, playing in Sunday League football, Foy played in Southport’s pre-season friendlies against Plymouth Argyle and Skelmersdale United. He was a surprise choice for the opening match of the season when he wore the number 11 shirt until substituted after 68 minutes. He left Southport for Burscough the following month after insisting on taking a pre-booked Spanish holiday against the wishes of manager Alan Ball. He played for a number of local sides and represented British Rail, who qualified for the railway ‘World Cup’ in June 1979. Until recently he lived in Old Swan, Liverpool.
