When Southport signed this blond, frail-looking schemer he became the ninth former Evertonian on Southport’s books. He had joined Everton from schoolboy football and spent four seasons there as an amateur, whilst serving his apprenticeship as a plumber at the same firm as Arthur Peat. While playing professionally for Wigan Athletic he had a trial with Lincoln City. He scored with a rocket shot on his Football League début. Alongside Blain and Blore, he developed into a clever ball player, though handicapped by his slight physique. He had come to Haig Avenue for a fee less than £500 so the club made a handsome profit when he was transferred to the eventual Fourth Division Champions Brentford. Known as ‘Wally’ at Southport and ‘Fenella’ (after the popular actress) at Brentford, he did equally good work at outside-right. After a couple of seasons in South Africa, he never re-made the Football League side. Eventually, he drifted into non-League football, retiring altogether in 1976 when shift work precluded his continuance.
