A much-travelled outside-left, he had worked in Hamsteels Colliery, having represented Durham Schoolboys. His best seasonal return with his five Football League clubs was 30 appearances in 1927—28 with Southend United before breaking his leg. He was not a noted marksman — just 4 goals scored in 78 League appearances. His six games at Haig Avenue were early in the 1930—31 campaign, and he was released after a trial period. He went back to the pits, working at Blackhall Colliery until his retirement in 1967. He was Secretary of the Blackhall Colliery Welfare team for 12 years and was their trainer in the 1950s. He had played for various local teams as late as 1947—48.
