Though he was initially signed on schoolboy forms by Middlesbrough, his family moved to Luton from Wallsend (where he was educated) so the Middlesbrough contact was lost. He was signed as an apprentice by Leeds who had seen him in the English Schools Trophy. Whilst he was with Leeds United he received two English Youth International Caps. His two seasons at Vicarage Road yielded IS Second Division appearances. He came to Southport on a two month trial, making his début in the opening match of the season which resulted in the club’s 10th successive away defeat. Despite conceding four goals in his only other League appearance, Southport were anxious to sign him but South African club Cape Town City withheld his registration and Southport abandoned their attempt once the asking fee of L5,ooo was known. He joined Durham Constabulary in 1974 and transferred to Leeds Police in 1975 but arthritis in his shoulder which had been dislocated stopped all football involvement. Recently retired from the force, he still lives in Leeds.
