The son of a famous Manchester United wing-half, he was a regular member of Chesterfield’s side for three seasons, playing 36 matches in their Third Division North Championship of 1930—31. Though right-footed he got pressed into service at left-half at Chesterfield — probably owing to the commanding presence at right-half of Horace Wass (q.v.) — and remained there subsequently. After missing only 3 games for Southport in 1932—33 he joined Chester in a part-exchange deal which brought Jolly to Haig Avenue. He had three seasons at York City during which he captained the ‘Minster Men’ to the sixth round of the F.A. cup only losing to Huddersfield Town after a replay in 1937-38. All told he made 278 Football League appearances. After the war he became a well-known scout and manager with several clubs around the lower divisions — managing York City, Stockport County, Darlington and Scunthorpe United besides scouting for Sheffield United and Portsmouth.
