This much travelled little Scottish winger – Southport was his 13th club – would have joined Southport a year earlier but the club were outbid by Bristol City. Later he injured his back there and City waived a fee! He scored a hat-trick against Accrington Stanley in the Football League Jubilee game prior to the start of 1938–39. He was most popular with Southport’s supporters because of his direct methods, only missing 6 matches following an attack of influenza around Christmas. He declined to accept the terms offered to him for 1939–40 and his request for a free transfer was granted and he joined Bradford City. He later gave Wigan Athletic fine service as a player and was accorded a benefit in 1951. He subsequently acted as trainer for many years, eventually retiring in 1985. Outside football he worked as a chargehand at Heinz and still lives in Wigan where he settled with his wife – a former Wigan Cotton Queen.
