Southport travelled to Portman Road home of Second Division Ipswich on this day in 1966 for an FA Cup third round replay, three days after a goalless draw at Haig Avenue. The prize for the winner was to be a home tie against the winners of Cardiff City and Port Vale in the Fourth round.
Cup fever was gripping the town once again, so much so that when Southport’s groundsman Tommy Evans had arrived at Haig Avenue on the morning of the first encounter, he found both goalposts to have been painted yellow. He spent all morning burning off the yellow paint and repainting the posts white in readiness for the afternoon’s match.
