Still smarting from a 4-0 new years day defeat at the hands of title rivals Fleetwood Town, Southport welcomed Telford United to Haig Avenue on this day in 2010.
Still only three points adrift of the league leaders with two games in hand they were looking to get their promotion train back on track.
With former Sandgrounder Liam Blakeman in their line up (and on course to pick up their Player of the Season award), along with former Southport loanee Adam Dugdale due to make his debut for the Bucks, Telford also welcomed back top goalscorer Andy Brown from suspension. With Telford themselves in the play-off chase it wasn’t expected to be an easy game and Telford came close to taking the lead in the first half when they were awarded a penalty. Brown’s return to the Telford line-up however didn’t go to plan and his penalty miss was to come back and haunt the Shropshire side in the second half.
Two second half goals from Matty McGinn and an injury time goal from Chris Simm gave Southport all three points and piled the pressure on Fleetwood.
