On this day in 1943, Southport faced Everton in an eagerly anticipated Football League War Cup qualifying match.
As the preview from the Liverpool Evening Express states the game was a real “make and break” match in terms of who would make it through.
The surprise was that Southport should capitulate so spectacularly, as they had beaten both Blackpool and Liverpool at Haig Avenue already. Southport had been expecting Manchester United’s inside forward Carey to Guest for them but his surprise inclusion instead in the Everton line-up certainly raised a few eyebrows.
