At Southport, in fine weather, before 6,000 spectators.

Tranmere pressed in the opening stages, but their finishing was weak. Southport improved later and had quite as much of the play as their opponents. The visitors missed two easy chances through hesitancy.

Subsequently Southport attacked strongly, without making any impression.

Half-time: Southport 0, Tranmere Rovers 0.

Tranmere’s goal had a narrow escape early in the second half. Beadles won a thrilling race with Briggs, but breasted the ball the wrong side of the post.

Immediately afterwards, Tranmere took the lead, MARQUIS scrambling the ball through a ruck of players.

Allan missed with a penalty kick, but SAPSFORD equalised.The replay will take place on Thursday.

Result: SOUTHPORT 1, TRANMERE ROVERS 1.
