Southport completed a treble of impressive victories against Blue Square Premier opposition at Haig Avenue, this time knocking Torquay United out of the FA Trophy.

Playing against a stiff wind coming in from the Blowick end of the ground, Southport had the better of the early exchanges, looking the more likely to score. It was little surprise when they did take the lead as Robbie Booth switched play from the right wing over to Mark Duffy, who put a tantilising ball into the near post, where Steve Daly escorted the ball into the net from close range.

Southport did well to hold their higher-league opponents at bay for the rest of the half, with Torquay frustrated every time they ventured forward. Indeed, Mark Duffy nearly worked an opening for himself with ten-minutes of the first half remaining as he played a one-two with Steve Daly, but Scott Bevan was equal to the return into the box, gathering the danger before Duffy could pounce.

Torquay had little to offer, with it being little surprise when Port doubled their lead when Chris Lever played a long ball perfectly to Daly, who lobbed the ball over the advancing Scott Bevan, with the ball going into the back of the net. Southport made it three in extra ordinary circumstances as a long ball up by Kevin Lee somehow caught Bevan way off his line, with the ball landing under the cross bar and hitting the back of the net.
