GATESHEAD take a slender lead back to the North East after a thrilling Blue Square North semi-final first leg at Haig Avenue.

Graeme Armstrong’s first-half strike was enough to give the Heed Army the advantage ahead of Sunday’s rematch,

Southport squandered an array of chances, and will be wondering how they didn’t find the net.

A defensive error allowed Armstrong to hit a 15th minute winner after a deep ball into the box caught out Earl Davis, with the striker alert to prod the ball past Port keeper Tony McMillan.

Southport rallied in the second half buoyed by home support, with Booth and Whalley penetrating down the flanks.

But despite numerous crosses into the box, Gateshead threw bodies in the way to protect the lead.

Ian Bogie’s side will fancy their chances at the Internation Stadium – but Southport boss Liam Watson is confident his side can force the goal they need.
