HALLIWELL v SOUTHPORT

Halliwell opened their season on Saturday, a team representing Southport being their opponents. The visitors won the toss and played with a strong wing at their backs, but after a temporary visit to the Halliwell quarters the ball settled down in the Southport half and there it remained, with very few exceptions up to half-time, when Halliwell by some splendid all round play had obtained eight goals, besides having one disallowed. On resuming the bombardment still continued, and they added another dozen so their total, winning by 20 goals to nil, a score which would have been greatly increased but for the grand defence of Parks, one of the Southport backs. The goals were scored by Scobie (7), Ross (5), Kay (3), Hamilton (2), Crossley, Dobson and Black (one each). Details about such a one-sided game would of course be superfluous. Halliwell: Bateson, goal; Pettigrew and Bone, backs; Dobson and Crossley, half-backs; Haslam, Kay, Hamilton, Black, Ross and Scobie, forwards. Southport: Kay, goal; Parks and Griffiths, backs; Traveloras, Tattersall, and Haslehurst, half-backs; Morris, Walmsley, McIntyre, Farrer and Martin, forwards. Referee, J.J. Bentley.
