Eight Goals In FA Cup Replay

Southport qualified to meet Swindon Town in the second round of the F.A. Cup when they beat Scarborough 5–3 in the first round replay at Haig Avenue to-day. Patrick scored three of the winners’ goals.

SOUTHPORT: Rutherford; Royston, Grainger; Newcomb, Hill, Scott (R. H.); Scales, Hawkins, Patrick, Scott (A.), Colquhoun.

SCARBOROUGH: Robinson; Mitchell, Fieldsend; Llewellyn, Jolley, Heelbeck; Allan, Beckett, Hardy, Rivers, Lister.Referee: Mr. H. Flack, Huddersfield.

The opening play indicated that the 7,000 odd spectators were to see a match of a typical cup-tie character. Southport got in another quick attack, but Patrick was again narrowly off the mark with another header when Alec Scott crossed.

Rain now began to fall heavily to make Scarborough players feel more at home, but Southport, who had their backs to it, continued to dominate the play.

In ten minutes they had taken the lead, Patrick scoring with one of his typical headers from a well-placed free kick by Newcomb.

THE EQUALISER

A surprise breakaway by Scarborough brought an equalising goal. A corner on the right produced a goalmouth melee in which Rutherford pushed out a shot by Hardy, and Lister snapping up the ball drove it into the roof of the net. This goal was at the end of 35 minutes, but within two more minutes Southport had again taken the lead.

Straight from the centre they developed an attack, and when Patrick dropped the ball at Hawkins’ feet the inside man beat Robinson with ease.

Half-time—Southport 2, Scarborough 1.

Scarborough showed they still had plenty of fight on resuming, although Southport’s more polished play enabled them to dominate the exchanges the visitors always dangerous in lightning raids.

After sixty-seven minutes Patrick scored a third for Southport. Colquhoun drove in from an oblique angle, and although Robinson stopped the shot he could not hold the ball, and the home centre forward had a simple task in pushing it over the line.

QUICK GOALS

Hardy went close for Scarborough, but at the eightieth minute Patrick added a fourth, following good work by Hawkins.

Straight from the centre Scarborough produced an attack which, although stemmed, brought a goal in simple fashion. From a clearance the ball went out to Lister who slipped it into the middle where Rivers, from an unmarked position, beat Rutherford with ease. Five minutes later Alec Scott got a fifth for Southport.

Two minutes from the end Hardy reduced Scarborough’s arrears.

Final—SOUTHPORT 5, SCARBOROUGH 3.

The attendance was 7,100, and the receipts £354 4s 6d.

SCARBOROUGH GO OUT FIGHTING

Last Six Minutes of Cup Replay Yield Four Goals

SOUTHPORT TESTED

Scarborough offered plucky resistance in the F.A. Cup first round replay at Southport yesterday, but went down by 5 goals to 3, and Southport will now entertain Swindon Town in the second round.

Robinson, the Scarborough goalkeeper, saved his side from a heavier reverse, bringing off many remarkable saves, particularly in the first half. Southport won chiefly because of their greater finishing power.

With fewer chances than their rivals, Scarborough were always dangerous against a defence which has not been so hard pressed in any previous home game this season. Jolly, a former Southport player, was a grand centre-half for the losers, and in Rivers Scarborough had an inside forward who is out of his class on this showing. His work was brilliant.

The other forwards tried hard, but did not finish well.

Patrick opened the score for Southport after 10 minutes. Lister equalised in 33 minutes, only for Southport to take the lead again immediately through Hawkins, the best forward of the game.

Patrick added a third goal for Southport midway through the second half, and in a rousing finish four goals were scored in six minutes. First Patrick netted, then Rivers, and afterwards A. Scott and Hardy.
