Southport 1 v 1 Hinckley United

MAN-of-the-moment Ciaran Kilheeney pounced two minutes from time to grab Southport yet another late equaliser.

Following Monday’s 1-1 draw at Northwich Victoria, Port were again seemingly headed for defeat before Kilheeney latched onto Earl Davis’ flick on in the 88th minute.

In truth it had looked like being a day of vicious irony for Kilheeney, paraded before kick off as the Blue Square North’s player of the month, the striker was guilty of wasting a fine one-on-one opportunity in the 65th minute – three minutes prior to Hinckley taking the lead.

Adam Webster reacted quickest to Lee Collins’ flick down to send United into the lead and their small band of following supporters into raptures.

The goal did not provide an immediate response from the Sandgrounder and it was the visitors who looked like adding to their lead, Andy Gooding’s deflected effort struck the post as Port looked fragile.

However Kilheeney’s predatory instincts returned with minutes remaining to keep the Yellows’ unbeaten home start to the season intact.

Southport put in a first half display full of individual excellence but perhaps did not show enough of a rounded team effort to truly trouble Hinckley.

Solid at the back, with the exception Matt West’s shot on target inside five minutes, Port just about egded a well contested half without imposing their quality on the visitors.

Strike pairing Steve Daly and Ciaran Kilheeney continuosly tormented the United back four and linked up well together to provide themselves with half chances whilst Paul Barratt offered the Yellows’ threat from midfield, going close on a couple of occasions from long range.

United for their hard work and posirive approach the game were awarded some early joy, following McMillan saving West’s early strike Andy Hall looked to dictate play in front of a typically powerful Southport back four.

However as the game progressed Port began to nulify the threat and with aerial dominance in tow, looked the more likely.

The best chance of the game arrived seconds before the break when Zak Aley, a substitute for Matty McGinn, latched onto Kilheeney’s through ball only to prod marginally wide.
