The fixture at Droylsden was never going to be easy for Liam Watson’s men, as the Manchester side are vying for a play-off position, and this was evident as both sides cancelled each-other out, with both goal keepers being redundant for large parts of the game.
Alan Moogan worked two half chances for Southport as he tried his luck from distance within the first quarter of the game, but both low shots lacked the pace to test Craig Mawson in the Droylsden goal.
Tony McMillan was called into action just before the break as he pulled off a goal-line save as Alex Brown’s ball in from the left was met by Steve Beck who shot was well blocked by the Port keeper.
The second half continued in a similar mode, with chances few and far between. Ashley Winn tried to make an opening for Steve Daly, but his shot was pushed away well from Mawson. Chris Lever was sent up for set pieces, having a good chance to head home from Matty McGinn’s right wing cross, but his chance also went wide of the target.
In the final stages, Allan Smart had a glorious chance to steal the points as McGinn’s ball found the striker in space in the box, but his shot went across goal and out for a goal kick.
