Southport hand K.O. to Bangor

SOUTHPORT …………….. 3

BANGOR CITY ………….. 1

Bangor City soon shook Southport in the Cup replay at Haig Avenue by taking the lead in the 13th minute.

Southport might have taken the lead in their first raid as Blore raced through the middle but his shot hit the post.

Another Southport attack landed with a volley from Harrison rising inches high.

Then Bangor’s left-winger, Jones, collected a long pass and centred for GRYBA to head a grand goal.

TWO GOALS

Blore missed a great chance for Southport, but then the home side struck and two goals within a minute gave them the lead.

In the 38th minute Rutherford headed out to JONES and the right winger hit the ball home, then Jones got in a header, but keeper Davies dropped the ball and BLAIN hammered it home.

Half-time: Southport 2, Bangor City 1.

Blain hit a post with a header and then a minute later Blore went down the right wing but Davies managed to keep the ball out of the net.

Then, in the 63rd minute Southport increased their lead. Left-winger Harrison picked up a loose ball, drew Davies and pulled the ball back and all BLORE had to do was to shoot into the empty net.

Bangor fought hard and Southport were obviously relieved to hear the final whistle.

Southport Recover From Early Shock

QUICK GOALS

SOUTHPORT—Harris; Bentham, G. Jones; Hannaway, Darvell, Rutherford; Jones (E.), Blain, Blore, Booth, Harrison.

BANGOR CITY—Davies; South; Hillydon; Bryn; Murphy; Wilkinson; Hunt; Gryba; Williams; Ellis; Jones (D.).

Referee: Mr. K. Collinge (Altrincham).

In the first minute Gryba shot across the face of the Southport goal after running through with Ellis. Almost immediately Southport struck back and Blore hit the post with a great shot from 20 yards.

Bangor went ahead with a shock goal after 13 minutes. Wilkinson sent left winger David Jones away and ex-Southport inside right GRYBA was on hand to head home his centre.

In the next minute Booth had a great chance to equalise, but he failed to connect with a through pass from Hannaway.

Bangor had another chance after 20 minutes when Wilkinson again laid on a fine pass for Jones. Williams lobbed the centre on and Gryba’s effort was well saved by Harris.

OPEN GOAL

Blore missed Southport’s best chance to date when after 30 minutes he shot well wide of an open goal.

In a blistering two-minute spell Southport equalised and grabbed the lead. After 38 minutes a cross from left half Rutherford sailed into the goalmouth and outside right ERIC JONES hit it first time into the net.

A minute later Jones headed a left wing cross back into the middle and BLAIN cracked home a great shot.

Half-time: — Southport 2, Bangor 1.

Bangor fought back and Southport were lucky not to concede a penalty when Hunt was brought down. Then Bentham scrambled the ball off the goal line after Harris had dropped a simple shot from Don Williams.

Blore made the score 3-1 after 64 minutes when he shot into an open net. Davies had run out to meet Harrison, but the winger crossed the ball for Blore to pick his spot.

Final: — Southport 3, Bangor City 1.

Attendance 5,433; receipts £730.
