A trialist from Barrow, he scored after only 2 minutes of his Reserve team debut against Fleetwood. Promoted to the league side he scored his 110th League goal on his last appearance, a speculative 25 yard shot caught the Brighton ‘keeper going the wrong way. He also centred for Alan Spence to score a last-minute equaliser in the 3-3 draw.

He showed his best scoring form for Scunthorpe United, netting 71 goals in 154 games and won a Third Division (North) championship medal with Derby County in 1956-57.

He never really recovered after breaking his left leg in training with Barrow in December 1962.

He won 4 England Youth caps in 1950-51, having also represented Ellesmere Port boys and Cheshire schools.

He spent the majority of his life in Ellesmere Port and passed away in Chester in 2005.
