Following Liam Watson’s departure to AFC Telford, new manager Alan Wright assembled almost an entirely new squad during pre-season. The former Aston Villa defender started the new season well with an opening win over much fancied Luton Town but any early season optimism quickly faded as his side slumped to defeat after defeat in the games that followed.
Wright was given more time than most had thought reasonable so it was no real surprise when he left by “mutual consent” on 19th December after 6 straight defeats. More surprising was his replacement as few had seen it coming . Former striker John Coleman returned to the club having masterminded Accrington Stanley’s return to the football league a few years previous. He set about rebuilding a squad that was woefully under performing. Amongst his signings were defender Toto Nsiala, returning to England after a spell playing abroad, John O’Sullivan, a winger signed on loan from Blackburn Rovers, and Jason Walker a prolific striker signed on loan from Forest Green Rovers.
Whilst the away form struggled to improve, Haig Avenue turned into a bit of a fortress and survival was confirmed with a game to go thanks to a world class effort from left back David Fitzpatrick against AFC Halifax. The signs for the future were good.
