On This Day: April 17th

The attendance on this day in 1993 was officially 504 (including gorillas!) but there were far more in the ground – the wide open spaces of a cricket ground afforded plenty of opportunity to get in through holes in walls.

Sensational Southport FC were crowned league champions after avenging their one and only home defeat on the opening day of the season. The sizzling Sandgrounders sealed the coveted championship with a 4-0 thrashing at Emley’s Welfare Ground spurred on by a Peter Withers hat-trick that set up wild and lengthy celebrations.

Wind assisted the ‘Port swept into a 3-0 half time lead with wave after wave of attacks on a bitterly cold afternoon. The third goal in added time was our 100th of the season. Peter Withers collected his hat-trick in the 67th minute and the game ended in a resounding 4-0 win. The referee’s whistle pierced through the wind and the fans thronged on to the pitch and the celebrations began-Southport were the champions.
