Though playing rugby at school he came to Southport via St Andrew’s in the Preston and District League. He played for the ‘A’ team during 1960—61 and when still only 17 gained a regular spot in the Lancashire Combination side early the following season. There he created a favourable impression, notching 21 goals in all. A tall youngster with a cowboy gait, he scored hat-tricks against Earlestown and Padiham. In the latter game the second string beat their East Lancashire opponents 10—0 away. He played his only Football League game at home to Barrow late on in 1961—62 in the absence of Reg Blore. Despite hitting the upright with a great drive he received little support from his inside-forwards and his lack of experience showed. Nevertheless he was signed as a part-time professional for 1962—63, but his contract was terminated some weeks later. He gave Clitheroe six seasons’ good service in the Lancashire Combination before switching to Horwich RMI, making his last appearance at Haig Avenue at right-half against Southport Reserves on 30 March 1968. Then he broke his leg after only six games with West Lancashire League side Longridge United and his career was over. He still lives at Lea, near Preston.
