One of only two Leicestershire-born players to represent Southport, George Haywood was a centre-forward from his earliest days when he combined football with working down the pit at Coleorton Colliery. It was his work for Gresley Rovers that commended him to Birmingham, after which he never worked down the mines again. As understudy to Joe Bradford (the English International and also a Coleorton man), he had the excellent record of 15 goals in 38 games spread over 5 seasons, including a hat-trick v. Ted Sagar and Everton. He maintained his scoring form at Chesterfield with 7 goals in 16 games. He also had trials for Warwickshire CCC as a spin bowler. He came to Haig Avenue from Cradley Heath in the Birmingham League for whom he had scored 24 goals in half a season but he made little impression and was back at Cradley Heath the following year. He returned to New Lount Colliery where he was employed in the time office and the medical department up to his retirement. He died in Coalville Community Hospital of bronchopneumonia after being admitted with a seriously inflamed knee
