A Cheshire County Schoolboy player, he later earned a 12-months’ suspension (reduced to 3 months) for signing for Tranmere Rovers while still registered as an amateur with Liverpool (he was only 17 at the time). He was an inside-right when he first joined Liverpool; later, centre-forward became his recognised position. A part-time professional, he joined Southport for a trial period. He scored on his Reserve team début against Morecambe and was subsequently signed for the rest of the season. All but two of his League appearances with the club were at inside-left. He later returned to Prenton Park without adding to his 5 games and 2 goals in his earlier three seasons spell. He then sampled Welsh League and Lancashire Combination football with a season in Toronto, Canada, sandwiched between. A general foreman in the building trade, he was a contract manager with a PPC firm in the Preston area where he moved in 1964.
