Original member of Southport Football Club (Association)
Prior to playing association football he played for Southport Hornets FC. (Rugby) – July 1881.
At just 17 Josiah played for Southport Football Club in the first association game. Combining his sporting excellence with a job as a printer’s clerk and later newspaper cashier alongside brother Edwin, he was a prolific local athlete.
After his spell with Southport Football Club, in 1891 he was playing Cricket for Hesketh Park Cricket Club and also taking part in local athletics events.
Josiah was nicknamed ‘the flyer’ by the Southport Visiter in Feb 1886
