An amateur throughout his 3 seasons with the club he made his wartime debut on 8th January 1944 against Blackpool after some promising displays for Southport ‘A’ (the name by which the reserve team operated in the District league).
He was praised by the Southport press in his early games when his ‘kicking was a feature’. Late on he was given an extended run as the club tried out in number of amateurs. He played 6 games early in the following campaign and in 1945-46 he had nine consecutive games at left-back between early September and mid October.
He got a surprise recall at right back for the second leg FA Cup tie at Oldham athletic when Stan Carr developed a high temperature the night before.
Despite his being referred to as a Maghull boy we have been unable to trace either him or his family; nothing further is known since he made the last of his 26 appearances against Rochdale on the 4th May 1946 in what was Southport’s last war-time game.
